What an amazing golf tournament. I'm at a loss for what to write about it all. I do know that I couldn't stop thinking: this is what golf is supposed to be like! It was a true challenge for the players. There were some unbelievably awesome shots. There were tough breaks. The top ten on the final leader board ranged from -1 to +4. Of course you could tell by the looks of it but the course is far more difficult than any average golfer can imagine. Tiger was in the running as were other big names like Thomas Bjorn, Davis Love III and even Vijay Singh. But guess what, it gets even better because the rookie, Ben Curtis a 26 year old from Kent, Ohio whom had never even played in a major, won! The last round was so captivating that I almost missed my softball game. Well actually that was because of the ridiculous traffic on Route 128 North at 1 PM on a Sunday afternoon! But I digress. All I can say is this fan can't wait till the next British Open.

Rickey Henderson signed for the remainder of the season with the L.A. Dodgers. And he's off to a hot start with two homers in four games. It seems like the fresh blood, Rickey and Burnitz from the Mets, is doing wonders for the previously dead bats of the Dodgers. Have to say, it seemed unfortunate that the Red Sox didn't sign Rickey for at least one more season. Well, maybe I'm in the minority here but I've especially thought about it when I notice how awful generally good players have been in the leadoff spot this season for the Red Sox. No doubt Henderson's a character (it drives me crazy when players refer to themselves in the 3rd person). But he can still play and with all that experience he can be a leader or at least a mentor in the club house. I don't know if the Rem Dog would give Rickey dirt dog status but I know I would.

Last All-Star Game the fans voted in Johnny Damon. This season I am psyched to say the fans came out in force and voted in deserving Jason Varitek. Tek beat out Chicago’s hometown favorite Frank Thomas. As a side note, I hope my 50 or so votes helped but I wouldn’t really know. MLB.com didn’t report the vote totals. Well I couldn’t find them anyhow. They gave the total for Tek but I couldn’t find how many votes the Big Hurt actually received. And initially it was reported to be a close race. The same thing bothered me about the regular All-Star voting. During the voting they showed and even updated some vote totals, but I wanted the full breakdown! It puzzles me why they don’t provide it.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about over Pedro pitching inside to Soriano and Jeter. Okay, so it sure made for an interesting game. But the pitch to Soriano was a strike and Soriano fouled it off his own hand. It was about time a pitcher backed Soriano back off the plate! Everyone knows Soriano hangs almost half his body over it. And I haven’t seen a pitcher, until Pedro that backed him off. What happened to pitchers being dominant? Other than a handful of pitchers like Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Pedro Martinez, and maybe Roger Clemens, it seems like batters are dominating the plate and pitch location rather than the pitcher. Pedro’s pitch to Jeter has a little more of a question mark next to it. But still it was a lot closer to a strike than when say Roger Clemens decides to hit someone in the head! That is a true concern, what will Roger do the next time he faces the Red Sox? He has absolutely nothing to lose now. He’s already a lock for the Hall and supposedly it’s his last season. It’s quite likely he’ll go after Nomar and Manny or Millar! Pedro can say that Georgie Porgie doesn’t have enough money to install fear in him. But doesn’t he have any concern for his teammates? I sure wonder what the rest of the team thinks about the situation.
